HOLY CROSS CHURCH, VERNA - GOA

              HOLY CROSS CHURCH, VERNA - GOA      The Holy cross church, Verna - Goa is one of the popular Goan churches and is locally known as the 'Verna church' in Goa. The first version of the Holy cross church according to historical records was in 1568. The Holy cross church lies in the hearts of the village of Verna.      The Verna church is build in the traditional manner over looking the large church square. It has been build in three different places since the original construction. The present Verna church was build in 1612.    " When the Portuguese entered this land about the year 1519.... they build an altar under the tree and consecrated the land to god with the first mass said in Salcete" - oriente conquistado . The mass was probably celebrated by a Dominican priest. The Feast of Holy cross church is celebrated on the Sunday which comes after 14 September every year.

                                                        TRADITIONAL  PORTUGUESE HOUSES IN GOA.  The Architectual of Portuguese style build  houses. The European life styles was encouraged in an attempt to make separate newly converted Goan Christians from their cultural roots .they adopted a European outlook but didn't cut themselves off their Indian root completely . the resulting cultural fusion affected house design. The catholic houses built between the middle of 18th and 20th century were more outward looking and ornamental with, balcoes and verandas facing the street.

Our lady of help church, Ribander

                               Our Lady of Help Church, Ribander- Goa                        Our lady of help church , Ribandar was build near the banks of river Mandovi . The original structure of the Ribandar church was in the shape of a ship when it was build by Portuguese sailors in 1565.      Our lady of help church, Ribandar was build by Portuguese sailors in thank of Our lady who saved their them from a ship wreck. According to legend Our lady appeared miraculously during a rough storm in which the ship was caught in the Arabian sea.      The Ribandar church a three storey bell tower to the right. In front of the Ribandar church is a big cross which was once a part of  the chorao seminary. Over the main altar is a painting of a ship with Our lady depicted on it with a similar fresco found on the exterior wall on the side of the river. Our lady of miracle church

Our Lady Of Miracle Church The church of our Lady of Miracles also known as St. Jerome's Church is situated at Mapusa in North Goa. This church was originally build by Portuguese in 1594. This church was dedicated to Saint Jerome and is still often called as St. Jerome's church. The building caught fire in 1961 and a large part of it was destroyed. and after its renovation the church was dedicated to our lady of Miracle and is locally known as Milarge church. The exterior of the church is in beautiful Portuguese architecture with blonde bricks and tan coloured trim. It has an altars which is devoted to our lady of Miracle.

Old Secretariat Building

Old Secretariat Building The secretariat Building is a prominent landmark of the Panaji city. It is the classic example of Portuguese architectural style. however it was built by Adil Shah the Muslim ruler of Goa during 16th century. The Portuguese later modified the structure to build the fantastic rest house for the area's viceroy. After Goa's Liberation from Portugal in 1961,Adil Shah's palace began new journey as the Goan state legislature building and became popular as Secretariat. The tiled sloping roofs, the balconies made of wood and the stone carvings give the secretariat Building an quintessential Portuguese tools. In the year 2000, the Goa Assembly moved to a new Building across Mandovi River.

Palacio do Deao

                                    Palacio do Deao , Quepem   This 213 years old mansion was built by a Portuguese noble man, who was the Dean of the Church, and founder of Quepem town. The house faces the Church he built and is on the banks of the wildly beautiful Kushavati River . A Palatial house, it occupies 11,000 sq ft of floor area. It is built in an unusual style blending elements of Hindu and Portuguese architecture . This house is unique amongst Indo-Portuguese house types , where the structure of the   palace shows an adaptation to Indian customs .

Our Lady Of Rosary Church

Our Lady Of Rosary Church Navelim's church was first built by the Jesuits in the 1590s; the present, Portuguese-style whitewashed structure was constructed later on when the older building became too small. According to legend, this church was built in mud similar to the other churches in Salcete between 1594 and 1598.
