The Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church


The Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located in Panjim, Goa  at a distance of 1.5 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand, India. The Church conducts mass every day in English, Konkani, and Portuguese. The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is one of the famous churches in Goa.The colonial Portuguese Baroque style church was first built in 1541 as a chapel on a hill side overlooking the city of Panjim.




Architecture and Interior
The architecture of the Mary Immaculate church is a beautiful blend of the Portuguese-Baroque and Goan styles. The imposing façade is distinctive with its two towers and even taller belfry. It can be seen from a great distance, and is sometimes known as the ‘crown’ of Panaji.
The interior of the church is simple. The church has a couple of altars. The main altar is dedicated to Mary Immaculate, on the left is Jesus crucified and to the right is Our Lady of the Rosary. Beautiful statues of St. Paul and St. Peter are seen beside the altars. The St. Xavier's Chapel is another attraction of the church.

The feast of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is celebrated on 8th December every year. During the feast this church is beautifully decorated with lights and the entire Church Square is occupied by a lively fair. The church area has been the venue of numerous film shootings.  Standing on the gallery of the church, you can see the entire view of the lovely Panjim city.

St. Clara's church

                                     St. Clare Church, Assonora, Goa is called ‘Santa Clara Igreja em Assonora, Goa’ in Portuguese. St. Clare Church, Assonora, Goa is popularly called ‘The Assonora Church’ locally in Goa. The Assonora church was originally a chapel built in 1781. The Assonora Chapel was however burnt down several times by the Marathas and was rebuilt every time it was destroyed. The Assonora chapel was originally affiliated to the parish of Tivim to the St Christopher Church in Tivim. The Assonora Chapel was raised to the status of a Parish of St. Clare Church, Assonora on 18.10.1805.

BISHOPS PALACE

The Bishops Palace also known as the Patriarcal Palace is situated in Altinho the hillock overlooking the city of Panaji. It is one of the main attraction in this area and is the residence of the Archbishop of Goa.  In order to reflect the elevation of the Archbishop to a Patriarch, the Bishop's Palace was constructed. The diocese of Goa was established here in the year 1533, and raised to an Archdiocese in 1557.  The development of this area had began in year 1886 starting with the work of Archbishop to Patriarchal status finishing by the year 1894, the first Patriarch, "Dom Antonio Sebastiao Valente" entrance is designed with coats of arms
