PILAR SEMINARY / FR. AGNELO SEMINARY

Pilar Seminary is one among the two surviving seminaries out of the four originally build by the Portuguese. This stands on a hillock at Goa Velha .

The  Capuchin monks founded the Seminary in 1613. A University of  Science, Arts and Theology was established in the premises of the Pilar Monastery in 1633.

The beautiful seminary features a marble platform, altar and amazingly beautiful stained windows which were build in Germany. The beautiful old church at the seminary has an exquisite baroque doorway made out of carved stone. A niche above the doorway holds a statue of St. Francis of Assisi and the door has on it a carving of two crossed hands, symbolizing Christ and St Francis.

There is a small museum, which houses fragments of pottery and temple sculpture excavated from the site including a lion - the Kadamba symbol, Portuguese coins and a beautiful carving of Mary Magdelene done in 1733 by a Goan sculptor. It also has a collection of postage stamps released in the memory of Blessed Joseph Vaz during the Portuguese rule in Goa.

SIRIDAO CHAPEL

SIRIDAO CHAPEL Siridao lies on the northern fringe of the ancient Gopakpattana port, which once covered coastal areas of Goa Velha and Agasaim. Ships from different parts of the world dropped anchor till a millennia ago at this teeming port.  The quaint architecture of the Jesus of Nazareth chapel at Siridao has remained shrouded in obscurity, but a few are convinced the unusual dome-shaped structure holds a key to evidence of  pre-Portuguese Christianity and a multicultural society in the area. Perched on the edge of a hillock with a panoramic view of Zuari bay, the centuries-old chapel appears to be an extension of a smaller dome-shaped original.  The Jewish presence may have been wiped off during the inquisition in Goa from 1560 to 1812. Cave behind the Chapel  The third statue stands faded and forlorn in an open area behind Siridao church.   "The Portuguese Jews arrived in In...
